Eye Health Support for People Who Spend Hours on Computers and Phones

Donald Watson August 31, 2026 4 minutes read

In our modern world, the necessity for screens has skyrocketed. Whether for work or leisure, people spend countless hours staring at computers, smartphones, and tablets. As a consequence, eye health has never been more important. Prolonged exposure to screens can lead to a range of issues, often collectively referred to as Digital Eye Strain (DES). This condition can manifest symptoms like dry eyes, headaches, blurred vision, and discomfort in the neck and shoulders. Fortunately, there are several strategies to help mitigate the adverse effects associated with excessive screen time, promoting better eye health for those of us who are glued to our devices.

One of the simplest yet most effective methods to safeguard your eyes is the 20-20-20 rule. This technique involves taking a break every 20 minutes to look at something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This brief respite helps to relax the eye muscles that can become fatigued from continuous focus on close-up screens. By breaking the habit of constant staring, you give your eyes a chance to recover and refresh, which can significantly reduce the symptoms of digital eye strain.

Another crucial aspect of eye care involves ensuring that your workstation is ergonomically friendly. Position your computer screen so that it is about an arm’s length away, with the top of the monitor at or just below eye level. This positioning minimizes strain by encouraging a more natural posture, reducing the likelihood of tilting your head forward or upward. Furthermore, consider using an anti-glare screen filter to decrease reflections and glare from overhead lighting or sunlight, creating a more comfortable viewing experience.

In addition to making adjustments to your workspace, it’s vital to maintain proper screen brightness and contrast settings. Using screens that are too bright can lead to increased eye strain. Instead, adjust your devices to a comfortable level similar to the natural ambient light in your surroundings. In darker settings, reducing backlight intensity can be particularly beneficial. Moreover, consider utilizing dark mode settings available on many devices to reduce the amount of blue light emitted, which is known to contribute to eye fatigue.

Speaking of blue light, it’s essential to understand the role it plays in modern-day eye health and well-being. Blue light is emitted from digital screens and can disrupt sleep patterns when viewed before bedtime. While the full impact of blue light on eye health is still being studied, some individuals find relief by wearing blue light filtering glasses when using screens. These glasses can block a portion of the blue light, potentially reducing discomfort and fatigue during prolonged use.

Furthermore, staying hydrated is a crucial yet often overlooked aspect of eye health. When we focus on screens, we tend to blink less frequently, which can lead to dryness and irritation. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day helps keep your eyes moist and comfortable. Pair this with regular use of artificial tears, if necessary, to combat dryness caused by extended screen time.

Lastly, incorporating supplements specifically formulated for eye health may provide additional support. Nutrients like lutein, zeaxanthin, and omega-3 fatty acids are known to promote eye health and can be found in eye health supplements. These can provide antioxidants that help protect the eyes from oxidative stress, which can be exacerbated by prolonged exposure to screens.

In conclusion, while we cannot entirely escape screens in this digital age, we can take various measures to support our eye health. By implementing simple strategies like the 20-20-20 rule, optimizing workspace ergonomics, managing screen brightness, staying hydrated, and considering eye health supplements, we can significantly reduce the adverse effects of extended screen time. Prioritizing eye care today can help ensure our vision remains clear for years to come.
